Fong’s Pizza- Des Moines, IA

Merry Christmas from Des Moines, Iowa 🙂

I am here with Jon, his mom, Bridget, and sister, Kelsey celebrating the holiday. On Thursday night, we arrived in Des Moines after five hours of driving. The crew decided to get some pizza and I was excited to see what Iowa had to offer. We were definitely in for a treat.

Jon’s mom suggested Fong’s Pizza, and I had read about it on slice.seriouseats.com, a great website that I like to explore before trying new pizzerias outside Chicago. Fong’s has only been open since 2009, but it is located in what was the oldest Chinese restaurant in Des Moines. Therefore, they kept the asian flare but geared the menu toward pizza and also added a tiki bar. An unsuspecting combination, but a great one for sure.

Mesmerizing beer cooler: From domestic
to import beers… not too shabby

We arrived around 7:30pm and were surprised to see a packed restaurant. We had a beer at the bar and were seated after approximately 15 minutes. We started with some appetizers: Chinese cheesesticks and egg rolls. I didn’t try the egg rolls because they were said to be spicy, but Jon & his mom thought they were great!

Chinese Cheesesticks 🙂

A unique variation on cheesesticks were chinese cheesesticks… basic goodness but definitely a unique adaptation to the normal greasy favorite. I enjoyed the crunchy taste of the egg roll wrapping and it added to the ambiance of the restaurant.

For the four of us, we ordered two small pizzas: Pineapple & Shrimp and JP Combo. My three guests love shellfish, so they were interested in the Shrimp pizza. The JP Combo reminded us of Jon’s name, so we also ordered that one. The option of wheat crust was a welcome choice. Anyway, both pizzas had their own spice and pizzazz, and unlike Chicago pizza, it was because of the sauce. Fong’s pizza has a tangy sauce that is noticeable regardless of what toppings there are.

It was a welcome change and we enjoyed both pizzas. Both with many toppings… but individually tasty 🙂

JP Combo: Hand-tossed wheat crust
Garlic butter crust, house sauce, pepperoni, capicola,
(1/2) mushroom, onion, asiago, mozzarella

Pineapple & Shrimp Pizza: Thin wheat crust
 Kung Pao Sauce, Shrimp, Pineapple
bacon, onion, bell pepper, asiago, & mozzarella

If I went back again, I would request thin-crust instead of hand-tossed because the regular crust didn’t thrill me. Also they have killer lunch specials… so I would make sure to return during those hours! Enjoy your weekend 🙂
